Anthropic + AWS: Up to 5 GW of Trainium Capacity in $100B+ 10-Year Deal

Announced around April 21, Anthropic has committed to AWS Graviton and Trainium 2 through 4 chips with optional access to future chip generations, in a deal estimated at over $100 billion over 10 years providing up to 5 GW of new compute capacity. The deal directly addresses Anthropic's widely reported compute shortage, which has led to customer quota restrictions and the recent Claude Code Pro-tier modifications — though the new capacity is not expected to come online for at least one quarter.

Why It Matters

This is one of the largest compute commitments in AI history and signals Anthropic's bet that its demand trajectory justifies decade-long infrastructure lock-in. The delay before capacity comes online means the current user-facing rationing continues in the near term.
