SynthID Hits 100B Watermarks; Google Expands to OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Chrome

Google DeepMind announced SynthID has surpassed 100 billion watermarked pieces of content, with Gemini-based verification used over 50 million times to check for AI-generated media. Google is now licensing the technology to OpenAI, ElevenLabs, and Kakao, and integrating content provenance verification directly into Google Search and Google Chrome. Pixel devices will display provenance trails for videos from the moment of recording through all subsequent edits.

Why It Matters

Cross-industry adoption of a single AI provenance standard — including direct competitor OpenAI — represents the most significant step toward universal AI content attribution. Browser-level verification in Chrome puts AI-content detection in the hands of billions of end users without any additional install.
